HGTV Takes Iconic Child Stars Like Melissa Joan Hart and Jodie Sweetin Back to the ’90s for Retro Home Makeover Show

White refrigerators, wall-to-wall carpeting, ivy stenciling; the 1990s design trends modern homeowners have gone to great lengths to cover up are about to enter the spotlight once again, thanks to HGTV’s new competition series, “Totally ‘90s House.”

Hosted by Jaleel White—the actor anyone with a birth year starting with “19” will know as Steve Urkel from “Family Matters”—the six-episode adventure will follow two celebrity teams as they search the country for homes stuck in a time before artificial intelligence.

Once the nostalgic abodes have been tracked down, the celebs will compete against one another to update the spaces without completely eliminating the ‘90s charm.

Fans of throwback sitcoms will have a hard time choosing a team to root for, as both sides are stacked with actors who defined the era.

Melissa Joan Hart from "Sabrina the Teenage Witch;" Brian Austin Green from “Beverly Hills, 90210;” Jodie Sweetin from “Full House;” Beverly Mitchell from “7th Heaven;” Matthew Lawrence from “Boy Meets World;” Keshia Knight Pulliam from “The Cosby Show;” and Joey Lawrence from “Blossom” will all enter the competition.

Each team of familiar faces will receive help from HGTV design experts, Carter Oosterhouse and Sabrina Soto, as they face off to create a perfect ‘90s-inspired home and walk away with $25,000 for the charity of their choice.

“Everybody loves the ‘90s again,” Jaleel said in an HGTV press release. “The fits are back, the playlists are on repeat, and kids who weren’t even born yet are binge-watching the shows we made famous.”

“But while some things from the ‘90s are timeless… some of y’all never got the memo that the decade ended,” he continued.

“We asked America to show us the homes still living in the past, and the response was incredible. Now it’s time for the ultimate throwback transformation. Get ready for the biggest ‘90s house battle ever.”

A few of the cast members are bringing more than nostalgia to the table; Beverly told Parade magazine she renovated her own home, while Domino reported that Melissa’s husband works in construction and she often helps him with projects.

Jaleel took a trip down memory lane in an interview with People magazine to shed some light on just how close this cast has been for decades.

“I know every member of both teams rather intimately just from crossing paths over the years,” the host shared, recalling the time he spent crashing the “Full House” set as a child star. “So for us, it really is almost like a high school reunion come to life.”

“What’s really special about us all being a part of this is we have a shared life experience that nobody else understands,” Beverly shared in a trailer for the series.

That special bond will come in handy when the competitors get to work.

“I think that unspoken bond that we have innately instills respect for each other’s opinions and the way we communicate,” said Joey. “That seamless sort of transition from friends, into partners, into teammates… To me, that’s what makes us a good team.”

Jodie is excited for longtime fans to see a new side of the cast as they roll up their sleeves and do some hard work.

“It’s fun to see us as ourselves, as real people having fun doing something that we don’t normally do,” the “Full House” alum told People magazine. “I think that fans will really love that because they get a sneak peek into who we actually are, and our friendships with each other.”

Keshia echoed Jodie’s sentiment, adding her excitement to show the world who she is outside of a role as memorable as Rudy Huxtable from “The Cosby Show.”

“People know the characters that we’ve played, but they aren’t always privy to the human beings that we are behind the scenes,” she said. “I think this gives an opportunity for people to see our personalities a little bit more and build on the memories that they have of the characters that have been a part of many people’s childhoods.”

Don’t worry, the show isn’t going to move too far past the good old days. To make the ‘90s vibes even stronger, the trailer also revealed that the stars will have to ditch their smartphones and use retro technology to capture footage of the renovation projects.

“Totally ‘90s House” premieres on HGTV on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 9/8 central.
