The Wackiest Homes To Hit the Market in 2025—From a Teardown Infested by Feral Raccoons to an Underground Missile Silo

by Kellie Speed

The past year has been full of ups and downs—particularly for the housing market. However, one thing has remained consistent throughout 2025: a regular stream of wonderfully wacky property listings that have tickled house hunters across the U.S.

There is, of course, no shortage of unique dwellings spread across all 50 states. However, some truly exceptional abodes defy all tradition and norms, offering up an opportunity to reside in a property that is both a home and a conversation starter.

In Washington, for example, homebuyers will find an intriguing dwelling inside a Cold War–era missile silo that has been meticulously repurposed as an underground home and doomsday bunker.

Then there is the Cape Cod cottage perched so precariously on the edge of an eroding ocean bluff that it appears at risk of toppling into the ocean at any minute.

But, as the saying goes, there's a buyer for every home.

While some properties have been quickly snapped up, others have lingered on the market due to their unusual nature. Here's a look at this year's most eye-popping properties, and you won't believe what's No. 1!

10. 1259 County Road 147, Alvin, TX

Price: $2,824,000

Blue-hued mansion with a pool-inspired interior: If blue is your favorite color, this 10,504-square-foot estate was custom-designed for you!

From cobalt tile floors and painter's tape-colored crown molding to azure walls and aqua-colored tile, the underwater-inspired interior of this ornate eight-bedroom residence was the brainchild of its seller who coincidentally owns a local pool company.

Over-the-top amenities at this luxurious pool pad include a grand entry with double staircases, an elevator for easy access to all three levels, two laundry rooms, and turfed outdoor balconies.

The gated, 1.7-acre lot also has a lavish beach-entry pool (naturally!) with a hot tub, waterslide, swim-under waterfall, and swim-up bar. There is also a four-car garage with an entertainment room above it.

Eddie Richards of TADA Realty Group is the listing agent.

9. 136 Calvin Gray Rd, Madrid Twp, ME

Price: Off market

Converted railroad caboose: This former Maine Central Railroad car was relocated to its retreat lot in 2002 and transformed into a cozy one-bedroom home, still full of original railway memorabilia.

Found throughout the 360-square-foot vintage residence, offering sleeping accommodations for up to five guests, are original observation seats found in two loft areas, an antique steering wheel, and sidecar windows to let in an abundance of natural light. Originally listed for the very affordable price of just $129,000, the property was offered fully furnished when it hit the market earlier this spring.

The 1-acre investment property nestled near Sugarloaf and Saddleback mountains also has railroad crossing signs at the entrance.

8. 155 Shortwoods Rd, New Fairfield, CT

Price: $1,199,000

Spaceship-inspired 'Starcastle': This other-worldly residence was built in 1985 and designed by futurist architect Roy Mason.

The 5,036-square-foot residence was created using sprayed-on polyurethane foam, fireproofing material, and a waterproof polymer finish to make it appear as though it were built from papier-mâché.

Artistic details throughout the four-bedroom residence include stone floors, a curved kitchen, a sunken conversation pit, and a spaceship-inspired second-floor loft.

Located on 23.5 acres overlooking Squantz Pond and Candlewood Lake, the property also has a gazebo, a guesthouse, and a pool.

Lisa Weisenberger of Luks Realty is the listing agent.

7. 50342 Brown Rd E, Sprague, WA

Price: $1,450,000

Former Atlas E Missile Silo: Attention preppers, historians, and investors: Here's a unique opportunity to buy a decommissioned Cold War–era missile silo with an underground bunker.

Located on 24 acres of privacy, this 75-year-old structure that once served as a military storage facility housing intercontinental ballistic missiles was "built to withstand the test of time."

The "once-in-a-lifetime chance" to live "mostly beneath the earth" in a mostly windowless interior offers a 1,906-square-foot underground living area. Above ground, there is an 820-square-foot living area with an industrial-style kitchen connected to a 3,794-square-foot workshop.

The "blank canvas of endless possibilities" also features a 12,946-square-foot missile silo.

Christine Lee Naumann of Real Estate by You LLC is the listing agent.

6. 1 Anderson St, Seal Beach, CA

Price: Off market

Sky-high beachfront water tower: The historic Seal Beach Water Tower, which was built in 1892 to hold water for passing steam engines, was converted into a nautically designed, single-family residence in 1985.

The 2,828-square-foot home was listed for $5.5 million over the summer, having last traded hands in 2022, when it was purchased by the current owners for $4.5 million. Period details found throughout the four-bedroom dwelling include a circular staircase, an elevator, hardwood floors with a compass rose design, a third-floor updated kitchen, and a model train "weaving through the rafters."

A wraparound deck and fifth-floor, open-air rotunda provide breathtaking city and ocean views.

5. 157 Brownell Rd, Eastham, MA

Price: $99,000

Oceanfront Cape Cod cottage on an eroding bluff: If the price tag of this three-bedroom seaside residence seems too good to be true, it's because it is at imminent risk of succumbing to the Atlantic Ocean and protected Cape Cod National Seashore below.

Originally listed for $1,195,000 in 2022 and then sold for just $395,000 in 2023, the property has been inching closer and closer to the crumbling water's edge with each passing storm due to fast-rising sea levels.

Fearless owner David Moot decided to take the last plunge, buying the 1,422-square-foot ranch in December 2023.

"Life’s too short, and I just said to myself: 'Let’s just see what happens,'" he told Bloomberg. Now, it looks like he may be trying to recoup at least a portion of his investment.

Potential buyers are warned to "not walk the property without permission." It is no surprise that it is being sold as is.

Matthew Burger of Kinlin Grover Compass is the listing agent.

4. 3200 SW Fairmount Blvd, Portland, OR

Price: Off market

Cube-shaped, hillside home: This eye-popping, corrugated metal-clad residence appears to be a quaint bungalow from the street level. However, tucked away behind the hills of Council Crest is a treehouse-inspired dwelling that "unfolds like a vertical journey."

Built in 1976 and designed by architect Willard Martin, the two-bedroom midcentury residence is comprised entirely of modular spaces and features bubble-shaped and geometric windows, parquet floors, and radiant heat.

The 1,762-square-foot, open-atrium floor plan features a lower-level family room with a fireplace and a primary suite with a private terrace overlooking the wooded lot, a middle-floor retro kitchen with a dining area and deck access, and a top-floor studio and guest suite with a hidden bed.

Originally listed in September 2025 for $785,000, the property was sold just 49 days later for $810,000.

3. 127 High Rd Unit 42, Bisbee, AZ

Price: $247,000

Former gold-mine bunker carved into a mountain: This "mini earth home" is tucked away in a deserted cave sitting at the center of 10 contiguous lots that occupy just 0.64 acres.

Offering stunning views from Mule Mountains to Mexico, the property boasts six leveled homesites. The cave itself does not have running water, a bathroom, or a kitchen, but town water, electricity, and sewer are all available, according to the listing. Access to the property can prove challenging as well, with paved parking available "off road."

The "highest, private town lot" could be used as a base camp for outdoor enthusiasts or transformed into a legacy compound.

Sinan Zakaria of Listed Simply is the listing agent.

2. 609 Bee Tree Rd, Parkton, MD

Price: Off market

Teardown occupied by feral cats and raccoons: While no interior photos were included for obvious reasons, this uninhabitable home hit the market for $300,000 in August 2025 and was sold to a daring buyer just 65 days later for $180,000.

At the time the listing was live, it encouraged buyers to look beyond the "falling down" house and realize "the value is in the land." Interested parties were further advised to not enter the house "under any conditions." An outhouse and an old Subaru are said to have been conveyed with the sale.

The 4.86-acre property is located near streams, the NCR trail, and Bee Tree Preserve.

1. 700 Gate 9 Rd, Terlingua, TX

Price: $2,100,000

Boeing 727 aircraft in the living room: This jaw-dropping, hangar-style home sits on 80 acres in a remote desert town.

The investment property that has been used as a short-term rental still features many components from the aircraft, including the front portion of the plane, making it quite a conversation piece in the living room.

Other highlights include a cozy hideaway in a former cargo hold, an intact cockpit, and a modernized fuselage featuring a bedroom and home theater with reclining airplane seats. Offered with "most furnishings," the residence can accommodate 11 guests.

The property is also located just 20 minutes from Big Bend National Park.

Lynn Behrens of Legacy Broker Group is the listing agent.
