Taylor Swift Reveals How Travis Kelce Kept ‘Top Secret’ At-Home Proposal Under Wraps as She Jokes About His Nerves Before Big Moment

by Kelsi Karruli

Taylor Swift has opened up about the moment that NFL star Travis Kelce popped the question to her on the grounds of his Kansas mansion—detailing how he managed to hide an intricate floral garden that he had set up for the occasion while they were inside the property.

Kelce proposed to Swift in a very intimate setting in the backyard of his $6 million Leawood, KS, dwelling, with the duo later sharing the happy news of their engagement on Instagram.

The duo, both 35, have since made a handful of appearances together—with Swift proudly flaunting her enormous diamond ring and singing about her love for her partner on her new album, "The Life of a Showgirl," while Kelce has voiced his joy at being able to introduce the pop star as his fiancée.

Now, Swift has shed more light on the proposal itself, which took place just minutes after she wrapped her debut appearance on the "New Heights" podcast, which Kelce hosts alongside his brother, Jason Kelce.

During an appearance on "The Tonight Show," the songstress explained to host Jimmy Fallon that she had no idea the proposal was about to take place—because she was unable to look out of the windows of Kelce's home while they were filming the podcast, allowing a team of people to construct the incredible floral display without her knowledge.

Now, Swift is once again sharing insight about her proposal from Kelce, also 35, which occurred just moments after she appeared on the football star and his brother, Jason Kelce's podcast, "New Heights." (New Heights)

"So basically, I think for Travis, the podcast was just sort of a distraction, sort of a ruse, to keep me not looking out the windows of the house," she said.

The songstress noted her husband-to-be thought of everything and even placed "blackout drapes on every single window of the whole house."

"He was top secret about this, and I really appreciate that. But then afterward I kind of realized, he’s walking around sort of nervous about the podcast," she revealed.

"He’s like, ‘My heart is racing. I just really want—I know how much this means to you. I really want this to be what you hoped it would be,’ because we’d been talking about doing the podcast and announcing the album.

"He’s like, ‘My heart’s racing,’ and I’ve never seen this dude nervous ever. He’s not a nervous person," the songstress added.

After they finished recording the podcast, Kelce asked Swift if she wanted to "walk around the backyard and have a glass of wine."

"I’m like, ‘I’m always going to want to do that.’ And then I realized exactly why all of the windows were curtained and why he was nervous. It was the best-possible-case scenario," she said.

Although the "New Heights" episode was released Aug. 13, it is unclear when it was filmed; however, Kelce's father, Ed, previously revealed that his son popped the question about two weeks before they publicly shared the news on Aug. 26, suggesting the proposal had taken place not long before Swift's podcast appearance debuted.

Kelce clearly went to great lengths to ensure that the couple would be able to keep the news of their engagement under wraps—preparing an incredibly intimate setting at his property, where they were able to soak up time together away from prying eyes.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end snapped up the 17,000-square-foot mansion in the desirable suburb of Leawood, KS, in September 2022 for $6 million.

Located inside a gated community, the grand estate sits on nearly 3.5 acres at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac.

The six-bedroom, six-bathroom mansion sits behind a gated entrance that opens to a dramatic circular driveway. The inside is an entertainer's dream and includes a chef's kitchen, formal dining room, media lounge, wine cellar, and full bar.

Outside, the expansive backyard is anchored by a "Beverly Hills-style" pool area with plenty of space for lounge chairs, umbrellas, and pool toys.

There's also an outdoor kitchen, a tennis/pickleball court, waterfall, hot tub, and miniature golf course.

The abode is far more secluded than his other home in Kansas City, a 4,200-square-foot abode in the city's Briarcliff West neighborhood that he purchased for $995,000 in 2019.

The NFL star, who began dating the "Lover" hitmaker in 2023, popped the question with a stunning diamond rock that perfectly matched the other sparkler that he previously gifted her.

They captioned the Instagram post, "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married."

According to TMZ, the sparkler on Swift's finger is an old mine brilliant cut and the designer is Kindred Lubeck.

Kelce perfectly matched Swift's chic aesthetic by sporting a navy blue collared shirt and a pair of white pants.

The singer appeared to be overjoyed with the proposal as she embraced Kelce in a slew of photos while showing off her stunning diamond ring.

In one photo, Kelce could be seen kneeling among a garden of roses while Swift appeared shocked.

In another snap, Swift softly grabbed her lover's face as she leaned in to give him a hug.

The newly engaged couple even posed for a photo on a swing, where Swift laid her head on Kelce's shoulder and gave the camera a soft smile.

Just days ago, the songstress offered fans a glimpse into her swoon-worthy romance with Kelce in her new album, "The Life of a Showgirl," which was released on October 3.

Swift revealed that she has already pictured her life with Kelce in her one of her tracks titled, "Wi$h Li$t," confessing that the NFL pro has left her envisioning what kind of mom she would be to a "whole block" of kids.

She sings, "I just want you/Have a couple of kids, got the whole block lookin' like you/Got me dreaming about a driveway with a basketball hoop."

"I made wishes on all of the stars/Please God, bring a best friend who I think is hot," she added in the upbeat track.

Swift made several references to the football star in other tracks, even giving fans a glimpse into a more intimate part of their relationship.

"Honey, I'm home, we could play house/We can bed down, pick me up/Who's the baddest in the land/What's the plan?/You could be my forever night stand," she belted in her other hit, "Honey."

In "Fate of Ophelia," she sang, "You dug me out of my grave and saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia/Keep it one hundred on the land (Land), thе sea (The sea), the sky/Pledge allegiance to your hands, your team, your vibes/Don't care where the hell you've been (Been) 'cause now (Now), you're mine."

And, Swift even admitted that tying the knot didn't cross her mind before she met Kelce, confessing in her hit "Eldest Daughter" that she "didn't believe in marriage."

Her lyrical confessions came just a month after it was revealed that Swift and Kelce were looking to say "I do" in Rhode Island, where the pop star owns a sprawling $17.75 million retreat that is currently undergoing extensive renovations—with sources claiming that the duo could wed as early as next summer.
