Kendall Jenner Opens the Doors to ‘Top Secret’ Custom-Built Mountain Retreat—With Room for Her ‘Future Kids’

by Kelsi Karruli

Supermodel Kendall Jenner has proudly unveiled the "top secret" mountain sanctuary that she had built from the ground up to serve as her perfect escape from the bright lights of Hollywood—and where she one day hopes to raise a family.

The 30-year-old model welcomed Architectural Digest into her newly completed dwelling, which is situated in a “top secret mountain location" in Wyoming and is used by Jenner as her "getaway home" when she needs to escape her busy life in Los Angeles.

Having spent years working on the plans for the property—before enlisting a revered interior designer to help her turn it into a whimsical and quirky wonderland—the fashion star and reality TV icon opened up to the outlet about the process, explaining in a new interview her vision for the dwelling.

“One of the most special things about ground-up builds is you’re working on the house for so long and you’re envisioning moments with friends. You’re envisioning what kind of nights and laughs and talks are you going to get into,” she said in a YouTube tour of the property.

Despite enjoying a reputation as one of the industry's most sought-after models, Jenner was not interested in following any particular design trends. Instead, she adhered to her own "grandma-chic" aesthetic that she worked with top designer Heidi Caillier to implement.

In a YouTube tour of the home, she lifted the lid on the special place the property holds in her heart as she opened up about what she envisions doing at the dwelling.

“I worked with Heidi Caillier on this house, and one of the first things I said to her was [that] I really wanted grandma-chic. I wanted the explosion of patterns and fabrics and textures,” she said.

Jenner began by showcasing her stunning living area, which comes complete with a unique floral-patterned couch, which Jenner "sit-tested" to ensure it was "perfect."

“I have always had this dream and vision of just a very exotic, kind of crazy couch that becomes the statement in the room,” she said.

It was this furniture item that really kick-started Jenner and Caillier's working relationship, with the model noting that she knew from the moment she laid eyes on the vibrant fabric that it was exactly what she had envisioned for the vibe of her home.

"I’m beyond happy with that couch,” she told the publication. “There has never been a doubt in my mind about the fabric. From the moment I saw it, when Heidi and I started working on this project, I never wavered."

Elsewhere in the living area, Jenner proudly displayed her large book collection, which she's built up by picking up novels from various antiques shops.

Many of the books sit on her coffee table, while others are situated on a "rare" Gibson piano her pal helped her to track down.

Jenner then showcased her chef's kitchen, which features a marble backsplash, expansive island, state-of-the-art appliances, and a cozy fireplace, which she revealed was her mom's idea.

“The fireplace in the kitchen was a Kris Jenner idea. She sent me a photo, and it was perfect," the fashion star noted. The amenity fits perfectly with the "cozy vibes" she had always wanted in the dwelling.

Although she wanted to keep her kitchen neutral, she added a pop of color with red-and-white checkered floors and a blue oven.

Heading into the bedroom, Jenner showcased the wooden ceiling beams, which help add to the rustic style of the home—even though it is, technically, brand new.

“Although I feel it’s a very mature room, it also feels like a little girl’s room in a way. So I kind of feel like my childlike self in this room,” she explained. It's a place that makes her “want to read a million books.”

The lived-in feel of the room perfectly represents what "The Kardashians" star wanted to achieve with the design of her home, explaining that she wanted the property to give the impression she had lived there for years, even though it was completed this year.

Moving into the bathroom, Jenner showed off her stunning shower, which is adorned with red-and-white checkered walls.

Another bedroom in the property boasts "adult bunk beds," with four queen-sized beds built into the space, with a ladder to access the two top-level spaces, each of which features its own curtains, enabling guests to cocoon themselves in their own nook.

She noted that she wanted each area to feel like "their own little world."

This is the room that Jenner envisions for the children in her life—from her nieces and nephews to her own kids in the future. However, she points out that the beds can easily accommodate her adult friends, too.

“I imagine my nieces and nephews being in here and probably my future kids being in here, but I've had friends stay in this room, and the bed is the perfect size for an adult as well," she said of the space.

In the exterior of the dwelling, Jenner transformed her Bambi Airstream into a third guest room—having received the vehicle as a "very special birthday gift" that she found she did not need in L.A.

"It was a very special birthday gift and very sentimental," she explained. “It was here in L.A. with me, and I didn’t have much use for it. Then I thought, 'Wait a minute, how cute would that be as a guest room?'"

Now, she revealed, “it’s the cute spot where you put that one friend who booked the trip super last minute."

At the end of the clip, Jenner noted that she loves the home because it helped push her out of her comfort zone.

“This house was really semi-experimental for me—I wanted to kinda send it. I really wanted to test my limits and see how far we could take it while still feeling like me. It felt really fun, really refreshing, and just a little bit different for me," she said.

According to AD, Jenner purchased the land on which her home now sits "around five years ago," having first fallen in love with the area while spending summers in Wyoming as a child, when she first formed a love of horses and riding.

When she bought the parcel—a purchase she has kept closely guarded—there was a dilapidated home on the property that she'd initially hoped to salvage. However, it was deemed to be in too shoddy a state to rescue, prompting her to pivot to building her own abode.

Jenner previously opened up about the homebuilding experience in an interview with Vogue, when she admitted that she loved the process so much, she had considered quitting her fashion career to pursue it full time.

"I swear to God, I’m going to stop everything and just design homes. I’m not kidding," she said.

The model, who is primarily based in Los Angeles, added that, while she loves her home in California—which she has previously featured in another Architectural Digest feature—there was something about the "simple life" in the countryside that she couldn't resist.

"I love my space in L.A., but I also really love the simple life. I like getting up every morning and throwing on a bathing suit or sweatpants and no makeup and just being free with my day," she added.

Jenner continued: “I think about the future a lot, but I try not to overplan because you know I’m a planner.”
