$3.9 Million Asian-Inspired Zen Retreat Perched Atop a Mountain Boasts Full Feng Shui Layout for Ultimate ‘Peace and Harmony’

by Kellie Speed

Mountain getaways are all about peace, privacy, and relaxation—but one peak-top property is bringing a whole new meaning to the concept of a personal sanctuary, offering not only safety from prying eyes, but a level of Zen rarely found in a private abode.

The 10-acre estate in Greenville, SC, which is on the market for $3.88 million, sits on a "secluded" parcel atop Paris Mountain; however, it was designed to emulate the ancient Chinese practice of feng shui, which focuses on creating harmony between humans and their natural surroundings.

Feng shui principles have been applied to every corner of the 7,400-square-foot "architectural sanctuary," which features a zen garden, koi pond with a waterfall, a see-through fireplace, and a guesthouse with its own tatami room.

Surrounded by rolling lawns, lush gardens, and verdant woodland, the property is the perfect place to find true serenity.

"It's a 10-acre retreat on a mountain, so it's like your own private sanctuary," says listing agent Sijia Hughes, of Herlong Sotheby's International Realty.

Built in 1988, the property last traded hands for $2.3 million in 2016—however, it has undergone several stunning upgrades since then, all the while maintaining its Zen roots.

"The sellers have done some updating, but the home was Asian-inspired when they purchased it," Hughes says. "Some of the materials used are from Japan and the cabinets are from Italy."

In essence, the sprawling dwelling is something of a contradiction, designed both for large-scale entertaining, while also promising buyers the opportunity to enjoy elite levels of privacy.

"While this Asian-inspired estate easily hosts gatherings of over 100 guests, it sleeps only a select few, offering three private ensuite bedrooms in the main house for those who value peace, privacy, and harmony," the listing notes.

The exclusive north and south wings of the home with private entrances are ideally separated to offer privacy between the owner and guest quarters.

The expansive open floor plan with an indoor-outdoor pool was created to offer a seamless flow of energy, light, and balance to the home.

"The pool is heated, and a portion of it extends to the outdoors," Hughes adds. "In the wintertime, you can just close the door and open it up during the summer months."

Floor-to-ceiling glass walls line the great room that features breathtaking mountain and garden views.

A sleek kitchen has custom black cabinetry, a breakfast bar, fireplace, and access to a spacious deck.

"It's located on a mountain yet is just 10 minutes from downtown Greenville," Hughes noted. "It's also located in a private area adjacent to Paris Mountain State Park with hiking and biking trails."

Other highlights include a spa, sauna, fitness or studio space, and a private office next to the primary suite offering stunning views of the peaceful zen garden.

A two-bedroom guesthouse, three-car attached garage, and greenhouse can also be found on property.

"It's a one-of-a-kind property that you can't duplicate," Hughes says. "It's also very rare to find this kind of acreage in this area."

Hughes says she has had a lot of interest from locals from the Greenville area, but the buyers have been a bit of a surprise.

"What's interesting is that we have had more younger people show interest in the home than boomers," she notes. "I would have thought it would appeal to empty nesters."
